One of the best parts of planning your wedding (aside from wine tastings and design renderings, of course) is the support system surrounding you. From your wedding party, family, and friends—to your team of vendors and your wedding planner—there are so many people who are there to help ensure your wedding day is one to remember.

But it’s also incredibly important to know what everyone’s roles and responsibilities are to avoid crossover, convulsion, and plans (and toes) getting stepped on. Today, then, we wanted to offer a quick overview of a wedding planner’s role versus wedding party responsibilities. Let’s dig in…

In a nutshell? A full-service wedding planner is responsible for almost every aspect of your wedding day—which includes tons of work leading up to that all-important weekend. A wedding planner is with you from the beginning—helping you hire the best vendor team, collecting RSVPs, finding the venue best suited for the experience you want to create for your guests, sourcing those impossible-to-find design details, running your ceremony rehearsal….we could go on (and on…and on).

A great full-service wedding planner is there in a myriad of ways to ensure your engagement is absolutely effortless. In addition to things like handling logistics, overseeing vendors, and managing your budget—the best wedding planners also protect your peace above all else. They step in to help navigate nuanced family dynamics, keep outside opinions at bay, and remind you to remain present and celebrate your love.

When the day-of arrives, your wedding planner is responsible for ensuring a smooth celebration—in every way, shape, and form. They make sure all of those key moments happen on time, that not single ceremony chair or piece of flatware is out of place, that your family is gathered when it’s time for portraits, that toasts don’t run over, that everyone is served their meal smoothly, and—most importantly—that your every need is attended to with decorum and discretion.

Psst…wondering if you really need a wedding planner by your side? Find out why hiring a wedding planner is essential.

More than anything else, your wedding party is there to support you on your wedding day and make sure you’re having an incredible time (and join you on the dance floor, of course). Depending on your preferences and what you have planned, your wedding party may also have a few responsibilities on your wedding day, including:

  • Giving toasts
  • Acting as ushers
  • Taking part in religious ceremonies
  • Helping you get ready

But for the most part, the bulk of wedding party responsibilities happen before your wedding. This includes things like:

  • Planning a shower or engagement party
  • Planning a bachelor/ette party
  • Attending fittings

On the day of your wedding, your wedding party members can certainly act as a helpful set of second (and third..and fourth) hands for your wedding planner as needed…but only if and when things are discussed and your planner is open to having more help. (This helps ensure no well-intentioned wedding party members are stepping on your planner’s toes or inadvertently throwing a wrench in the plans you worked so hard to perfect.)

Overall, your wedding party members are really the closest people to you who are there to party with you—while your wedding planner is the person who makes that party a smooth, seamless, celebratory experience for all in attendance.
